The port of Gerakas

At approximately half hour’s drive or 20 km. north of Monemvasia, you can visit the well hidden fjord-like sea lagoon of Gerakas with its picturesque village.

The area is known as the most southern marine fjord of its kind in Europe. Here you can enjoy the beautiful landscape of the protected wetlands, teeming with indigenous fauna, and take a walk along the Aegean island-like tiny village with its excellent fisherman taverns ‘sitting on the lap’ of the sea, and serving exquisite fresh seafood.

Over the centuries, this natural port of Gerakas has been both a pirate’s hideaway and an important port of call during the Byzantine and Venetian rule.
